Smoking Cessation Program
A 36-day program designed to help you become a non-smoker with the help of naturopathic medicine. Smoking cessation is a daunting task. It involves breaking firm habits, overcoming addiction, and strengthening will power. Naturopathic medicine uses several techniques to help you through this challenging transformation.

The first two sessions involve information gathering via a patient intake, a questionnaire and a physical examination. Laboratory assessments may be required if appropriate, at the beginning of the program. Two weeks following the initial visit is the first day of being a non-smoker. The following six sessions involve intensive treatments designed to support you physically, energetically and emotionally. This program utilizes hydrotherapy, clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathic medicine, counselling, ear acupuncture and traditional Chinese acupuncture as well as Chinese herbal medicine.

Throughout this program, you will be expected to sign and renew a contract promising to refrain from smoking. The success of this program depends on your commitment. If you are ready to become a non-smoker, then we can assist you in making this happen.

This program is available on an individual basis and as a group smoking cessation program as scheduled throughout the year.

Areas treated:
cheeks, nose, lips, nasolabial folds, marionette lines.

What are Restylane and Perlane?

The Restylane family of products includes Restylane and Perlane. Both are cosmetic dermal fillers that replace lost volume and restore youthful contours to the skin in order to smooth away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds).

How do I choose between Restylane and Perlane?
You don’t have to. In clinical trials, Restylane and Perlane were used in the same patients. The hyaluronic acid in both products is made by the same biotechnical process. The difference is in the gel particle size. Perlane gel particles are larger and designed for deeper injection than Restylane. Your doctor will decide which product is right for you.

How does my doctor know when to use Restylane and Perlane?
Your doctor will decide which product is right for you based on an evaluation of facial wrinkles and folds.

How long do Restylane products last?
Restylane products are proved to deliver long-lasting results. Restylane lasts about six months. Perlane lasts at least six months, in a majority of patients. The products’ patented stabilization technology helps maintain the cosmetic effect for those time periods.

Are Restylane and Perlane FDA approved?
Yes. They are approved by the FDA for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, like the ones from your nose to the corners of your mouth. Ask your physician whether treatment id right for you.

What is the history of Restylane?

Restylane has been used in over 1.4 million treatments in the U.S. and is available in more that 70 countries. It is the most studied cosmetic dermal filler in the world with dozens of publications in medical literature. Clinical studies showed no significant differences in the safety of Restylane and Perlane.

What should patients do prior to treatment?
Restylane and Perlane require no pretesting, but you should take a few precautions before being treated. Avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s Wort, or high doses of vitamin E supplements prior to treatment, because these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, discuss this with your doctor, who may prescribe a medication to minimize the recurrence.

Do Restylane and Perlane require an allergy test?
No. Restylane and Perlane do not require an allergy test and can be administered immediately – no waiting is required.

How are Restylane products administered?
Restylane and Perlane are administered by injection to the treatment site. Before treatment talk to your doctor about pain management.

Is any of the material left in the skin after it has dissolved?
No. Over time Restylane and Perlane products are broken down and eliminated by the body – unlike permanent fillers.

Do the injections hurt?
Restylane products are injected directly into the skin in small amounts by an ultrafine needle. As with all injections, some patients may experience discomfort. To increase your comfort, your doctor will assess your need for pain management and determine what technique is right for you.

How much do treatments cost?
A Restylane and Perlane procedure is customized to your specific needs, so the cost will vary. In general, the cost is comparable to the cost of similar procedures. Ask your doctor to give a cost estimate based on your particular needs.

How often should I schedule an appointment?
How long the aesthetic correction lasts is very individual. Talk to your doctor about the benefits of scheduling a follow-up appointment in about six months.

What are Restylane and Perlane products made of?
Restylane was the first cosmetic dermal filler made from hyaluronic acid that has been modified slightly to last longer than the body’s hyaluronic acid. In the human body natural hyaluronic acid provides volume and fullness to the skin.

How are Restylane products different than other hyaluronic acid-based products?
Restylane and Perlane contain no animal proteins. This limits any risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction. You should not use Restylane or Perlane if you have allergies to microorganisms known as gram-positive bacteria.

Which dermal filler is the market leader?
Restylane is the number on selling dermal filler in the U.S. and worldwide.

How do Restylane and Perlane products differ from Botox Cosmetic?
Botox Cosmetic and Restylane are used to correct wrinkles in different ways. Restylane products are natural, cosmetic fillers injected into the skin, adding volume to smooth wrinkles such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). In contrast, Botox relaxes the muscles that cause frown lines between your eye brows.

Why wait?
If you want to enjoy a smoother, more youthful appearance, ask your doctor if Restylane or Perlane is right for you.
Well-defined safety profile
Results are virtually instantaneous
1.4+ million treatments in the U.S.

Important safety considerations of Restylane
Restylane restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). After your treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, and tenderness. This will normally last less than seven days. Although rare, red or swollen small bumps may occur. If you have had facial cold sores before, an injection can cause another outbreak. In rare circumstances, the doctor may inject into a blood vessel, which can damage the skin. To avoid bruising and bleeding, you should not use Restylane if you have recently used drugs that thin your blood or prevent clotting. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18, you should not use Restylane.

Restylane should not be used by people with previous bad allergies, particularly to certain microorganisms knows as gram positive bacteria, or by people with previous bad allergies to drugs that have required in-hospital treatment. Restylane should not be injected anywhere except the skin or just under the skin.

The use of Restylane at the site of skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or infection should be postponed until healing is complete. Use of Restylane in these instances could delay healing or make your skin problems worse.

Important safety considerations of Perlane
Perlane restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). After your treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, and tenderness. This will normally last less than seven days. Although rare, red or swollen small bumps may occur. To avoid bruising and bleeding, you should not use Perlane if you have recently used drugs that thin your blood or prevent clotting. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18, you should not use Perlane.

Perlane should not be used by people with previous bad allergies, particularly to certain microorganisms knows as gram positive bacteria; by people with previous bad allergies to drugs that have required in-hospital treatment; or by people with bleeding disorders. Perlane should not be injected anywhere except the skin or just under the skin.

The use of Perlane at the site of skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or infection should be postponed until healing is complete. Use of Perlane in these instances could delay healing or make your skin problems worse.

NEW - Radiage

What is it?
Radiage is one of the latest non-surgical procedures for skin rejuvenation. It is not a laser. It is a Patented Radio Frequency System. The advanced Cool-Gel incorporates a cryo-gel to cool the skin’s outer surface while the radio frequency energy slightly heats and modifies the soft tissues beneath the skin. This causes the collagen to contract and tighten.

Benefits
This is an office procedure that is quick with very little down time. You can go back to work immediately. Non-invasive; there is no incision and no tissue damage Greater control is achievable compared to other treatments No bleeding or bruising with minimal risk of scarring Can be combined with other rejuvenation modalities

Recovery
There is minimal recovery time as necessary in invasive cosmetic surgery. You may resume all normal activities immediately. Slight redness may be seen for less than an hour and no more than 24 hours. The full effect of your treatment develops over a few months following the procedure and can be expected to last for one to three years. This varies among individuals. As with any cosmetic procedure, the results can be expected to fade gradually over time, at which point the procedure may be repeated if desired.

Radiage Frequently Asked Questions:
Is Radiage Safe?
Yes. Radiage has been improved and refined over years of experience with improved treatment methods and applications of radiofrequency energy.

Is it painful?
Radiage can be performed without any anesthesia, however, some patients may want oral medication for heat sensation. When the Radiage Wand is energized, patients feel brief, mild to intense heat in the treatment site followed by the immediate cooling effects of the cryo-gel.

What type of results can I expect?
Facial skin and the skin along the neck can be tightened providing a mild, non-surgical browlift or facelift effect. This treatment is often used for sagging jowls. The tightening effect may be used to firm up loose or sagging tissue in other parts of the body such as abdomen or legs. Most patients see results immediately. However, the results may be gradual over a three to six month period as the skin tightens and more new collagen is formed. Depending on the area treated, the skin laxity and your desired results, more than one treatment may be required.

How long will Radiage results last?

Treatment results last from 12 to 16 months. Your skin will continue to age as it has in the past and eventually you may wish to have another anti-aging procedure.

Ongoing Programs
FIRSTLINE THERAPY
Would you like to:
Have more energy?
Think more clearly?
Sleep better?
Reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes?
Get rid of your cravings for sweets?
Reduce pain?
Stay healthy and active as you age?

Patients have achieved all of the above and more with a new "therapeutic life-style program" called FirstLine Therapy. The FirstLine Therapy program is available at this office. If you have health goals you would like to achieve - ask about FirstLine Therapy today.

What is First Line Therapy?

Helping patients adopt a therapeutic lifestyle is the first and possibly the most important therapy doctors can use to treat many chronic health problems.

When patients have dyslipidemia, hypertension, altered body composition, Diabetes 2, Syndrome X; the treatment that is first recommended first is called, FIRST LINE THERAPY. First line therapy involves the undertaking of therapeutic lifestyle changes for 12 weeks (3 months) prior to the recommendation of any pharmaceutical prescription.

The National Institute of Health, the Heart, Blood& Lung Institute all recommend TLC / FLT as the initial step to treatment for:
Heart Disease, Stroke, Diabetes, Cancer, Arthritis, Osteoporosis, and even Alzheimer's disease are now being treated with first line therapy. NIH recommends lifestyle changes as the most important and cost-effective way to lower cholesterol. Lifestyle choices are also the key to many symptoms that are not classified as diseases, fatigue, stress-related symptoms, hormone imbalance, and many others (Aging).

Most of these health problems can be prevented or even treated by adopting a healthy lifestyle. First line therapy is not just about preventing disease it's also about living life to the fullest. It about feeling good every day, living without pain, performing at your best and aging gracefully. Metagenics developed the FLT as a treatment program for these conditions.

First line therapy is a therapeutic lifestyle program. It is not a weight loss program. It is used in the management of the above related conditions.

Therapeutic lifestyle is based on the premise that many diseases associated with aging are not inevitable outcomes of the aging process. Instead, these diseases are largely preventable, SIMPLY BY MAKING LIFESTYLE CHOICES / CHANGES.

Adopting habits of healthy living can delay the onset of illness in old age and increase the years of good health and is a science based concept. Rather than having many years of declining health and loss of function, good health and high levels of function are maintained well into old age. The years of infirmity and declining function are compressed into the final years of life.

MESOTHERAPY
Mesotherapy, pronounced "mee-so-therapy" has been performed in France for more than 100 years. It involves microinjections of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and homeopathic medications into targeted areas of the mesoderm, the middle layer of the skin. The injection modifies fat cells by blocking the signals of fat accumulation and simultaneously triggering the release of stored fat. The desired area is patient specific, targeting your most problematic areas.

Indications

Body Sculpting:
Specific areas of the body can be stubborn and fail to respond to exercise ie. love handles. Mesotherapy can be used to target these specific areas and sculpt your abdomen, arms, back, hips, and love handles.

Skin Rejuvenation:
The aging process and sun exposure leads to free radical damage and progressive collagen loss in the skin leading to decreased plumpness and resiliency. Sagging and wrinkling of the skin occurs from accumulation of fat, loss of skin elasticity and excessive free radical damage. Mesotherapy can remove fat from under the neck and tighten loose skin. The effects rejuvenate the face, eyelids, and neck without the unnatural appearance and painful recovery of surgical face lifting.

Cellulite Reduction:
Cellulite is a condition affecting over 90% of most post-pubescent women. The visible appearance of cellulite is a reflection of the contraction and hardening of collagen creating a bulging effect when water is retained and fat cells expand. Benefits - Increases blood flow to the targeted area - Dissolves excess fat tissue - Removes fibrotic, hardened connective tissue - Improves lymphatic drainage

NEURAL THERAPY

Neural therapy is a gentle healing technique that was originally developed in Germany over 100 years ago. It involves the injection of local anesthetics into autonomic ganglia, peripheral nerves, scars, glands, acupuncture points, trigger points and other tissues.

Neural therapy is based on the scientific understanding that injury and illness results in long-lasting dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system controls and regulates most metabolic, immunological, healing, digestive, hormonal, and many other systemic functions. It controls such diverse issues as blood flow, pancreatic enzyme and insulin production, and metabolic activity of the liver. An irregularity in the nervous system due to physical, psychological or toxic trauma may result in decreased flow of impulses through the body. A simple injection of anesthetic into the exact location where an abnormal impulse starts can restore the system and lead to deep healing. It will often help where all other methods have failed and is a safe, noninvasive procedure.

Neural therapy is often used as a successful pain control procedure.

The more common conditions that benefit from neural therapy:
Whiplash
Joint Pain
Back and Neck Pain
Post-Traumatic Condition
Muscle Pain
Head Injury
Athletic Injury

It may also be used in the treatment of but not limited to the following conditions:
Jaw and Head Pain
Gastrointestinal Complaints
Adrenal Gland Dysfunction
Asthma and Hayfever
Post-Surgical Pain
Cellulite or for Body Sculpting (Mesotherapy)
Scar formation
Sinusitus
Vertigo and Tinnitus
Thyroid Dysfunction
Hormonal Imbalances

How many treatments will a patient need?
Generally three to six treatments are required depending on the condition.

BIOIMPEDANCE ANALYSIS
The staggering North American obesity rate is 33% of all adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.1,2 Given this trend, assessing your body composition is vitally important. Research has shown that body composition is directly related to health. A normal balance of body fat is associated with good health and longevity. On the other hand, excess fat in relation to lean body mass—or altered body composition—can put patients at risk for chronic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.3,4

That’s why bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is an important tool in the FLT program. Improving patients’ key BIA markers may help reduce their risk for many serious health conditions.

What is BIA
BIA is a simple, in-office test that converts electrical measurements into quantifiable information about the patient’s
Body composition (lean tissue, fat tissue, and body water)
Fluid distribution (intracellular water versus extracellular water)
Tissue health.

How BIA Analyzers Work
BIA is performed in our office with a computerized bioimpedance analyzer (such as the Biomarkers Body Scan Analyzer 2000), using electrodes similar to EKG electrodes. After factors such as gender, age, weight and height are entered, the analyzer measures reactance and resistance and the built-in algorithm calculates the markers for tissues, fluid compartments, fat mass and phase angle. The imperceptible electrical current passes through electrode pads placed on the right hand and foot. In minutes, you’ll have measurements to help support an effective, personalized therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC) program.

What BIA Measures
BIA assesses body composition using electrical tissue conductivity, in order to provide:
Bioimpedance Measurements. A printout of the patient’s resistance and reactance. BIA gets this information through a direct measurement of the body’s impedance (resistance to the flow of alternating current).
Mass Distribution. Mass consists of lean body mass (or fat-free mass) and fat mass. Lean body mass is further broken down into key components—body cell mass and extracellular mass. Body cell mass is the total cellular mass of living cells—in other words, metabolically active body tissue. Extracellular mass is the body fluid and tissue found outside the cell.
Water Compartments. Total body water has two components—intracellular and extracellular water. Intracellular water is fluid within the cell. Healthy cells maintain their integrity and hold fluids. Extracellular water is fluid outside the cell. An increase in extracellular water may signal a disturbance in the cellular membrane—and a risk for a variety of chronic diseases.

How BIA is used in clinical practice
By establishing baseline measures for each patient’s markers such as Body Mass Index (BMI) and ECM/BCM (ratio of extracellular mass to body cell mass), we can help patients track their FLT progress and motivate them to stick with the program. BIA measurements show them whether they’re improving or need to make modifications. Patients’ progress is shown in an easy-to-understand format based on the Five-Compartment model, shown below.

BIA Vancouver

BIA Measurements

BIA provides measurements of:

Body Capacitance. An indicator of the quantity of healthy cell membranes in the body.

Resistance. Related to body water. Since more water is stored in fat-free mass, a higher value indicates healthier, lean tissue.

Reactance. The ability of cells to store energy (related to body capacitance). A low reactance indicates a breakdown in cell membranes in the body.

Body Cell Mass. The “living” cells of the body, such as those found in muscle, organs, blood, and immune cells. Also includes intracellular water (water contained within your cells).

Extracellular Mass. The amount of water in the body found outside the cells.

Fat-Free Mass. A measurement of total nonfat body compartments (also called lean body mass). Contains most of the body’s water. Fat Mass. The amount of stored fat in the body.

ECM/BCM. Ratio of extracellular mass (ECM) to body cell mass (BCM). A lower value, indicating a higher ratio of living to inactive mass, is desirable. Normal values are near 1.0 (a 50/50 distribution).

Body Mass Index (BMI). A ratio of weight to height used as a quick measure of health status. Values from 19-24 are desirable.

Basal Metabolic Rate. Based on fat-free mass, the number of calories the body uses each day, not counting the extra calories burned through exercise.

Intracellular Water (ICW). Water volume of body cell mass (i.e., water in the “living” cells).

Extracellular Water (ECW). Water volume outside the body cell mass (i.e., water in the “inactive” cells).

Tody body Water (TBW). Sum of ICW and ECW.

TBW/Fat-Free Mass. The percentage of fat-free mass that is water.

TBW/Total Weight. The percentage of total weight that is water.

Phase Angle. Indicator of cellular health
